JOB DESCRIPTION: Child Mentor
Location: Anna Marie’s Alliance, the Nest
Responsible to (supervisor): Manager of Youth and Health Services
Purpose:
Child mentor volunteers support the children and staff in the Nest, our childcare center dedicated to providing safety, shelter, and care for children ages 0-17. Child mentors spend time with children, letting them know they are worthwhile, helping them to heal, and teaching them how to treat themselves and each other. Child mentor volunteers work alongside children’s program staff to plan and execute activities and to meet children’s varied needs.
Responsibilities:
1. Be actively involved in providing supervision, recreation, and care for children staying at the shelter and in the community.
2. Provide support, understanding, and a positive example for children.
3. Mentor and provide recreational activities for the child.
4. Work with challenging behaviors with a trauma informed perspective, showing compassion and understanding of trauma’s impact on children’s behaviors.
5. Perform related duties as assigned.
6. Maintain confidentiality.
7. Arrive on time for commitments.
8. Log hours using VicTouch in the advocate’s office.
9. Wear your name tag during the shift.
Requirements:
1. Patience.
2. Strong interest in the growth and development of children.
3. Ability to work with people from diverse racial, cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
4. Ability to work as a team.
5. Healthy, non-violent lifestyle.
6. Understanding of how trauma and exposure to violence can impact a child’s development or a willingness to learn.
7. Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries.
8. Pass a Criminal Background Check.
9. Complete periodic trainings as required by DHS and CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
Time Commitment
We accommodate variable schedules, but ask for a minimum 6-month commitment.
