Thousands of Minnesota kids need help in reading and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for these students.
As a Reading Tutor, you’ll either choose to serve at a preschool helping children ages 3-5 to build skills and get ready for Kindergarten or at an elementary school helping students in grades K-3 to become better readers. With great training and onsite coaching, we’ll prepare you to work one-on-one or in small groups to help kids develop their reading skills and confidence!
This is an AmeriCorps member position with Minnesota Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group of more than 1,500 Minnesota tutors, determined to help students be more.
Perks as a Tutor
Give your time as a tutor and you’ll receive a scalable perks package based on the time commitment you choose (35, 25, or 18 hours per week).
All tutors receive:
- Stipend Paid Every 2 Weeks - $650
- Up to $4,336 for Tuition or Student Loans*
- Federal Student Loan Forbearance and Interest Repayment
Tutors serving 35 hours a week are also eligible to receive:
- Individual Health Insurance — Monthly Premium 100% Covered
- Child Care Assistance — Based on Family Size and Income
*Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.
What it Takes
Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
- Have served 3 or fewer terms with AmeriCorps State or National Program
