Inkind: Coborn Cancer Center Chemo Hats

First of all, thank you for making these caps. I lost my hair during my chemo treatments and wore the fleece hats. I now volunteer in the Cancer Center and often help women select hats. The fleece hats are very popular. It is amazing how cold our heads get without hair! Your work will be truly appreciated.

Buy 1 & 3/4 yards to make 6 caps. If you are curious of what colors to buy, go to your closet and look at which colors and patterns would go with your clothes. In winter, many of us wear black, brown, navy, tan and blue. Prints such as small prints and checks go well with many outfits. Many women will select these colors over the bright large patterns that are often typical of fleece fabrics.

Select the softest fleece possible. Many women who have lost their hair have really tender scalps. It is best not to finish the seams. Fleece doesn’t ravel and finished seams may irritate some scalps.

Cut one 16 X 24” band for each cap and two 7 ¼” circles for each crown. The stretch should be on the 24” side. Fleece will roll to the wrong side. I found it easier to draw a 7 ¼ circle out of parchment paper to have pattern for the circle.

1) Fold the right sides together to make the side band that measures 16 X 12” on each side.

2) Stitch the side with 1/4“seam allowance. Press seam open.

3) Wrong sides together, bring one end of each band through the tube and match seam and raw edges. The band is now 8” x 11 3/4” on each side.

4) Mark each side and then again in half so that you have quarter marks for the raw edges. Pins with colored ball heads work great for quarter marks.

5) Lay the two circles together wrong sides together for the crown. Pin them together and mark each half and then again so that each quarter is marked.

6) Pin the raw edges of the band and the circles together matching the quarter marks to ease in the fabric.

7) Stitch the band to the crown. I found it easier to stitch on the band side rather than inside the circle. It is fine to use regular straight stitch as this stitching doesn’t need to stretch. Trim off extra threads.

You can embellish the hats with buttons & bows, but make sure that stitching will not be on the part that touches the scalp. Soft flat decorations are best. Many will take naps or sleep in these caps.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me at Linda Kmitch (320-255-9292) or lindakmitch@gmail.com. Again, thank you so much for making the caps. They are so appreciated. The caps should be brought to the Cancer Center at CentraCare Health Plaza. Contact Alison Dahlin, at 320-229-5199, ext. 70857 or dahlina@centracare.com to make arrangements.

Volunteer: Mass Pianist

Calling all talented musicians! Are you ready for a unique opportunity to make an impact through your music? Country Manor Chapel is seeking a skilled pianist or guitarist to accompany and elevate our Sunday Catholic Masses. You'll collaborate with our cantor/singer on a weekly basis to curate a musical worship service (3-4 songs) for our congregation. Familiarity with other integral pieces of the Mass, such as the Gloria, Kyrie, Psalm, and memorial acclamation, would be a wonderful bonus. However, don't fret if you're not well-versed in them; we're open to musicians eager to learn. You'll showcase your instrumental abilities during our 45-minute Mass at 10:45 am every Sunday, as well as for the high holy days throughout the year, as available. Furthermore, if you possess a passion for singing, your vocal talents would be warmly welcomed as our Cantor is not always available. Additionally, if you're interested in an even deeper involvement, we also hold Mass every Wednesday and would be delighted to have you as our cherished accompanist. By becoming a part of our vibrant spiritual care community, you'll have the opportunity to touch hearts, uplift spirits, and contribute to a truly memorable worship experience. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to Chaplain Jeb - Director of Spiritual Care - at jreiter@countrymanor.org or (320) 258-8942.

Volunteer: Build a Patio, anyone?

This one is just a gift to our dedicated team.   We would love a simple paver patio so our team could enjoy a little screentime-free time in the beautiful outdoors.

We aren't looking for fancy, just a 10x10 paver area that we could set a table and a few planters.

Volunteer: Animal Foster Home - Dog, Cat, or Critter

Interested in Becoming a Foster?

Foster care is the most important part of Ruff Start Rescue. The animals depend on qualified people to join our team. RSR is looking for fosters to open their hearts and homes to animals in need and care for them until they are adopted. An RSR fosters responsibility is to love, feed, play and exercise, and provide social interaction for the foster animal. You are also required to take the animal to vet appointments and handle any medical tasks such as giving daily medications. It will always involve treating the animal as if it were your own. It’s easy to get started! The first step is to fill out and submit a foster application at: https://ruffstartrescue.org/get-involved/foster/ After RSR receives and reviews your application a home visit will be scheduled so you can meet someone from the rescue and discuss your questions and concerns about fostering an RSR animal. If everything goes well you will be able to begin your new role as an RSR foster.

All Ruff Start Rescue Fosters MUST:

Have all of their pets spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines.  Be patient!  There is no set amount of time a foster pet will be at your home.  We do not want to have to move foster pets from one foster home to another.  Constant moving can really set back their rehabilitation.  We do expect our fosters to be patient and keep their foster pet until they get adopted. Be willing to work with their foster pets.  Many of these animals are coming directly from shelter environments, have been picked up as strays, came from a life inside of a small cage at a puppy mill or were treated with malicious intent.  Many simply have no idea how to behave inside of a home.  It's not their fault, and they can learn with PATIENCE, GUIDANCE, LOVE, and CONSISTENCY. Attend at least one Adoption Event a month. Have the foster animals on a leash when outside at ALL time, unless you have a completely fenced in yard. Exercise their foster pet adequately.  Foster dogs are expected to have daily walks. Be willing to drive their foster pet to their vet appointments at one of the Vet clinics we work with. Give their foster pets their medication if they need it!  If your foster pet needs medication, you will be expected to give them their medication on time and in the correct doses. Send updates on their foster pets to their Placement Coordinator on a regular basis.  This would include the foster pet's likes, dislikes, biographies, and of course...lots of pictures!!  These will all need to be kept as up to date as possible. Supervise their foster pet at all times.  When no one is at home, the foster pets should be baby gated or crated, if necessary, for safety. You must have your own homeowners insurance or renters liability coverage before fostering with RSR.

**There are always animals that need a loving foster home and we will work with you to determine the ones that will best fit with your lifestyle. **

Volunteer: Advocate/Crisis Line Volunteer

HOW CAN I HELP? Volunteering at Central MN Sexual Assault Center (CMSAC) is both a rewarding and challenging way to get experience helping individuals overcome a crisis in their life.

Volunteering at Central MN Sexual Assault Center will help to build skills for future career choices and give you the satisfaction of helping individuals through a traumatic time in their lives.

There are a variety of ways that individuals can get involved with preventing sexual assault and/or helping people who have been victims of sexual assault. Our main volunteer opportunity is on our crisis line where volunteers take phone calls from victims and their support people, respond to local hospitals, and work with law enforcement. Other volunteer opportunities include helping with the Take Back the Night Awareness Event, becoming a CMSAC representative at community resource/health fairs, providing community education, and raising funds for our agency through CMSAC's fund-raising committee.  Service learning and internship opportunities may also be available.  Please call CMSAC for more information on how to get involved in these and other excellent opportunities!

As previously mentioned, CMSAC's main volunteer opportunity is to become a Volunteer Sexual Assault Advocate and work on our 24-hour crisis phone line.  This position, which requires a 40-hour training that can be taken through CMSAC, is described below:

VOLUNTEER SEXUAL ASSAULT ADVOCATE POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The main role of an advocate is to provide services for sexual assault victims at medical facilities, law enforcement centers, and during court and legal proceedings. Volunteer advocates also answer phone calls on CMSAC's 24-hour crisis line and provide crisis intervention, information, referral, and guidance to victims of sexual assault in the evenings and on weekends.  Advocates use their cell phones to take calls on the crisis line, so volunteer work can be done from one's home unless called in to provide in-person advocacy at a law enforcement, medical, or similar setting.

Volunteers are required to attend a 40-hour training in order to qualify as a sexual assault advocate and begin crisis line volunteer work.  These trainings are offered at CMSAC.  More information on upcoming training dates can be gained by contacting CMSAC.  In addition to the 40-hour training requirement, we ask that volunteers take 2 crisis line shifts per month and commit to volunteering with CMSAC for about a year.  (This particular volunteer opportunity requires you to be 18 or older).

To receive an application and more information, check out our website or give us a call!

Volunteer: Become a mentor 1 hour a week!

Make a BIG difference by mentoring a child in the child's school! It's simple. All you need to do is spend one hour per week with a local youth at their school. You can play games, hang out in the gym, go to the library, or the computer lab. Every week you will meet in the child's school at a time that works for both you and the child. By meeting at the child's school, you are not expected to be a tutor but simply be a listening, supportive friend to a child who needs someone in his or her life. This type of match relationship is designed as a one year commitment with nine months of that commitment being in-person. Throughout the summer months, contact with your Little Brother or Sister can be done over the phone, through email, or by writing letters. This relationship can later be extended into the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters community based relationship if you wish.

Are you looking for a way to give back to our Nation's Heroes? Do you enjoy driving and visiting with others? If so, becoming a volunteer driver is just the volunteer assignment for you!

Volunteer drivers help bridge the gap between Veterans and the access to healthcare that they so greatly deserve. Volunteer drivers pick up Veterans in the community and transport them to their medical appointments. This volunteer assignment offers the most flexibility, yet is the most rewarding. As a volunteer driver, you'll receive assignment specific training and will be able to drive one of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) fleet vehicles at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System. Volunteer drivers are needed in all counties across Minnesota, however, the greatest need lies within - Benton, Crow Wing, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns and Wright Counties.

Please call the Center for Development and Civic Engagement (formerly, Voluntary Service) office at 320-255-6365 or email us at vhastcvavsstaff@va.gov for more information.

Volunteer: Mentors and Coaches

We value our donors and volunteers. Through the generous service of others, 180 Degrees can enhance our programs and services for youth that need us most.   Our volunteers represent a diverse group of people. In using the valuable resource of volunteers, we match an individual's time and talent to service and support opportunities that make a difference.   Our volunteer activities range from small to large.... and we believe "there is no volunteer contribution too small."   We are looking for individuals to come alongside our youth and mentor, coach, and/or teach a new skill. Volunteers can help one time, or continue helping as much (or little) as they would like.   If you are interested in helping youth through satisfying volunteer service, don't hesitate to contact us either by email or phone.
