Tri-CAP Tax Site Volunteers needed!

People Helping People

Tri-CAP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $50,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by Tri-CAP receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.

The Tri-CAP VITA sites are located right here in Stearns, Benton and Sherburne counties .  All locations also offer free electronic filing.

A single mother of a 2-year-old worked full time as a hairdresser but, due to last winter’s severe ice storms, was unable to work for several weeks. She heard about the VITA program and went to a volunteer site. As it turned out, she was eligible for a very large refund amount. When she saw how much she would be receiving, she tearfully thanked the volunteers for their help.

A senior citizen who was involved in a serious accident was worried about owing a large amount of taxes because of the settlement.  After VITA volunteers completed her return, she owed only $51 and was so very thankful both for the assistance and for the peace of mind.

A taxpayer who had been homeless for the past year arrived at a VITA site to get help filing her tax return.  She was trying to reconnect with the mainstream population and was very grateful for the refund and the volunteer's free tax help.  She was happy about getting current with her obligations, as an important part of taking control of her life again.  Her current residence is a homeless shelter.
